Foo Fighters were certainly booked and busy in the early 2020's, between their tenth studio album Medicine at Midnight, the Dee Gees EP, and entering production on their first feature-length film, horror-comedy Studio 666. The fictional band in the film, Dream Widow, whose fate foreshadowed that of Foo Fighters, surely needed some ripping songs of their own. Dave Grohl needed no further encouragement to get dark and let his deepest metal influences come out to play.

With Grohl himself at the helm and tracking almost all the instruments alone, he swapped his iconic melodic rock anthems for old-school crossover thrash, doom, and sludge. In that spirit, he recruited a couple of friends and collaborators: Guitarist Jim Rota, and Foo Fighters' Rami Jaffee. The work included an epic ten-minute closing instrumental, 'Lacrimus dei Ebrius', with menacing drumming and dizzying tempo changes left, right, and center. Let's call it unleashing his inner demon.

The Dream Widow EP hit digital shelves on March 25, 2022, led by the single 'March of the Insane' dropped on February 15, 2022. Though its release was immediately and tragically overshadowed by the news of Taylor Hawkins’ passing that very same day, the record ultimately offers a captivating piece of Foo Fighters/Dave Grohl lore and stands as a worthy companion to Studio 666.
