Foo Fighters were set to be 'Out Cold' in winter 2001 with another contribution to a movie soundtrack lined up. The band headed back to Dave Grohl's Studio 606 home in Virginia to lay down a new version of a very old Dave Grohl composition.

Out Cold
November 2001 saw the release of ‘Out Cold’, a snowboarding based comedy film starring Jason London and A. J. Cook. Along with bands such as Sum 41, Andrew WK and Jimmy Eat World Foo Fighters were requested to appear on the companion soundtrack.
As was the case with a handful of past contributions to movie soundtracks the band elected to re-record an older song rather than give away a brand new track. The song, in this case, was ‘Make A Bet’, a song first recorded by Dave Grohl in 1992 as part of the ‘Allister Lob’ project. The song was then later again recorded by Foo Fighters during pre-production recording sessions for their second album ‘The Colour And The Shape’.
The band had re-convened at Studio 606 in early October following Taylor’s overdose in August and quickly got to work re-imagining the song. The new recording was noticeably more produced than the earlier recordings with more layered guitar work and an overall slicker sound. The core structure of the song remained largely the same with a near identical runtime.
For reasons that have never been made clear, the track was submitted with the title ‘Win Or Lose’, rather than ‘Make A Bet’, both lines featuring as lyrics in the song. The track was first included on the movie soundtrack released in November 2001 and was then also included as a B-Side on two Foo Fighters releases in 2002 - on a CD single for 'The One' and then on the 'All My Life' single in various formats.
