Studio 606 West

Foo Fighters were booked to appear on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, a now long established performance series which usually saw an artist playing a series of tracks at Maida Vale Studios in London, with one track being a cover becoming customary. In later years, the venue was In this 2017 edition the event was promoted as "live lounge month", with a different performer each day, with Foo Fighters kicking it off on September 1st.

On this occasion, owing to scheduling, Foo Fighters performed their Live Lounge set from their own Studio 606 facility in the US with host Clara Amfo flown out to join them in the live room of the studio.

Before the main live lounge event the band were linked up with breakfast show host Nick Grimshaw at 8am, around midnight back in LA. Dave briefly chatted with Nick either side of a performance of 'Times Like These'.

Clara's show began at 10am UK time, which was now 2am LA time. With the actual Live Lounge segment not beginning for a further two hours, at midday in the UK and 4am in the US, it's unclear just how live the broadcast was by that point. It's much more likely the bulk of recording at 606 took place just before or just after the earlier 'Times Like These' performance.

Either way, the band kicked off the Live Lounge set proper with their then latest single 'The Sky Is A Neighborhood'. It was not the first time the band had performed the track, having already given it a run out at some European festivals earlier in the year, but it was the first time it had been performed with backing vocalists. In the studio behind the band were Samantha Sidley, Wendy Wang and Alex Lilly. The trio had been recommended to the band by producer of Foo Fighters album 'Concrete And Gold', Greg Kurstin, having all previously featured in the touring line-up for Greg's band The Bird and The Bee.

After some more chatting with Clara next up was another classic track, 'Best Of You'. It was then time for the bands cover and Dave revealed to Clara that the band had originally planned to play Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna Give You Up' as something of a "Rick Grohl" but had by chance ended up playing the song live with him at a show in Japan a week earlier. They had therefore decided to let that be a "one time only" performance and instead opted to perform an AC/DC classic, 'Let There Be Rock'.

After the radio broadcast video of the set was also uploaded to the BBC website, featuring all four tracks performed. It was also broadcast on TV, but that edition missed the earlier 'Times Like These' performance. Their cover of 'Let There Be Rock' was also included on the compilation release 'BBC Radio's Live Loung 2017'.
